K12 is part of Stride, Inc. Its homepage says, “The leader in online education since 2000, K12 provides personalized, flexible learning that helps students thrive.” It offers tuition-free online public schools, tuition-based online private schools, programs for learning at home, live online tutoring, supplemental courses, summer school and adult learning.

What do K12 reviews say?

K12 Overview

K12’s About page says, “Since 2000, K12 has been a leader in helping students unlock their full potential,” and “K12 has served more than 3M registered learners through its managed public schools.” It also says, “Stride (K12 Inc.) tracks on the NYSE under the symbol LRN.” Stride’s Meet Stride page gives its mission as “Help learners of all ages reach their full potential through inspired teaching and personalized learning.”

For school districts, K12’s website links to K12 Learning Solutions, which says, “Fill staffing gaps, boost student outcomes, and expand your school district’s flexible learning options.” Our Stride review covers those district services.

Tuition-Free Online Public School

K12’s online public schools page says, “Like traditional public school, online public school is tuition-free,” and covers elementary (“Grades K-5”), middle (“Grades 6-8”) and high school (“Grades 9-12”). It invites families to “Select your state for a list of K12-powered online schools in your area.” Its homepage says, “Parents or other responsible adults act as the Learning Coach for their students.”

K12’s menus also list a Prekindergarten program, an Advanced Learner Program, Special Education, STEM Education, AP® and Honors, Dual Enrollment, Credit Recovery and Career and College Prep.

Tuition-Based Online Private School

K12’s online private school page says, “K12-powered online private schools each have their own fee structure.” Schools it lists include K12 Private Academy, The Keystone School, Grand Canyon Private Academy, Marian University Preparatory School, Coast to Mountains Preparatory Academy and “The George Washington University Online High School.” Its international page says “international families can choose from several tuition-based K12-powered online school options.”

Learning at Home

K12’s page on online learning at home describes programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with “full curriculum packages and individual courses for purchase from kindergarten through high school.” It says students “can learn part-time, full-time, or class by class,” and “Learning Hub provides more than 15,000 free, interactive lessons.”

Online Tutoring

K12’s tutoring page says, “All K12 tutors are passionate, state-certified teachers,” and “K12 Tutoring covers 110+ courses across elementary, middle, and high school.” “Subject areas include math, English, science, social studies, world languages, business, and test prep.” “Sessions are scheduled in advance and happen in real time.” For schools, the K12 Tutoring schools page describes “High-impact tutoring led by certified teachers, designed to integrate into intervention blocks and MTSS frameworks.”

Supplemental Courses

K12’s “Supplemental Courses” link leads to The Keystone School, which says, “For students in grades K–12, Keystone can accommodate a unique learning environment,” and “Our students have access to a wide range of courses, including Advanced Placement® courses.” K12 also offers K12 Skills Arcade, “an exclusive game-based learning platform that makes practicing essential skills fun.”

Online Summer School

K12’s summer school page says, “Summer is the perfect time for students to catch up, get ahead, try a new language, or explore electives.” It says “online summer school courses are offered for 6th–12th graders through K12 Private Academy and The Keystone School,” and that credit recovery is “Designed for students who didn’t pass a subject the first time.” In condensed sessions, “each semester course has been condensed to four weeks (20 instructional days).”

Adult Learning

K12’s adult learning page lists options from Stride brands:

K12’s Meet the Teachers page says, “All K12 teachers are state-certified,” and “Many have advanced degrees plus years of experience teaching in both online and traditional schools.” It says teachers are “Specially trained in online instruction” and “participate in ongoing, student-centered professional development.” Its accreditation page says, “K12-powered schools are accredited by Cognia™.”

K12 Costs

• Online public school: “Families do not pay tuition for a student to attend an online public school” (FAQ).
• Online private school: “K12-powered private school fees vary, but tuition generally ranges from $4,995 to $6,995 per year” (the same page).
• Tutoring: the K12 Tutoring pricing page lists a “Short Format” of 30 minutes at “$34.99” and a “Long Format” of 60 minutes at “$64.99.”
• K12 Skills Arcade: “It’s free for all students enrolled in a K12-powered school.”

We didn’t find prices for summer school, adult learning programs or district services on K12’s website. Ask K12 for a quote for the service you need.

K12 Terms

Terms depend on the service. K12 Tutoring’s guarantees page says, “If you aren’t satisfied with your child’s tutor, we’ll provide a free replacement session,” and, under its Grade Guarantee, “If you do not see any improvement in your child’s grades after completing 10 or more tutoring sessions,” “we’ll fully return a maximum of 10 sessions to your account balance.” For schools and other programs, ask for the written agreement, including enrollment and cancellation terms, before signing.

K12 Software

Requirements depend on the program. K12’s FAQ says, “Common household items and office supplies like printer ink and paper are not provided,” and “Our enrollment consultants can help address your technological and computer questions and needs.” Ask K12 which devices and internet connection the program you are considering needs.

According to its homepage, Proximity Learning is “Supporting 150+ School Districts Nationwide” with “State-certified virtual teachers,” and says, “We customize instruction around your bell schedule, curriculum, and IEP accommodations.” Its virtual schools page says, “Our standards-aligned, engaging curriculum covers nearly 150 courses in core subjects, World Languages, AP, CTE, and Special Education.” We didn’t find pricing on its website. K12 vs Imagine Learning

Imagine Learning’s homepage describes its offerings as “core curriculum, supplemental programs, assessment, professional learning, courseware, and instructional support,” including K–5 and 6–12 Certified Teaching Services, in which “Certified elementary and secondary teachers deliver live instruction.” Its About page says it works with “over 18 million students in over half of the districts nationwide.” Read our Imagine Learning review.
