Credit Recovery Programs for High Schools: How to Choose One

High school students work on laptops during a live virtual class in Allendale County, as in online credit recovery.

Credit recovery gives high school students a second chance to earn credit for a course they didn’t pass, so they can stay on track to graduate. But programs differ widely, especially in how much a student works with a real teacher.

How credit recovery works in high school

Students retake the content of a course they failed, usually focusing on what they didn’t master the first time. Programs generally fall into three models: self-paced online courseware, live instruction from a teacher, or a blend of both.

Why the model matters

Students in credit recovery have already struggled with the material once. Self-paced courseware can work for some, but many students need a teacher who can explain concepts, answer questions in the moment and keep them moving.

What a good program looks like

  • A live, certified teacher, not only self-paced software
  • Courses aligned to your district’s approved coursework and credit requirements
  • Progress and attendance data your school can use for credit decisions
  • Flexible scheduling during the school year, not only in summer

Questions to ask any provider

A good provider should start by asking about your district: your students, your schedule, your staffing and what has or hasn’t worked before. Then ask:

  1. Is instruction live, self-paced or both?
  2. Are teachers certified in the subjects students need?
  3. How are courses aligned to our credit requirements?
  4. What data will we get for credit decisions?
  5. Can students enroll during the school year?

Credit recovery from Fullmind

Fullmind’s online credit recovery program is taught live by certified educators, helping high school students make up missing credits and graduate on time with real instruction rather than self-paced software alone. For a comparison with courseware, see our Imagine Edgenuity review.

Every district has a dedicated account manager and access to Fullmind’s success managers. Fullmind doesn’t lock districts into rigid contracts, and districts don’t have to use everything they sign up for, so support can grow or shrink as needs change.

How to fund credit recovery programs

Credit recovery is often funded through Title I, Part A and state or local funds, especially when it supports students at risk of not graduating. Check eligibility and allowable uses with your federal programs coordinator. For more on Title I, see our Title I funding guide.

How to get started with Fullmind

  1. Tell us about your district. An education consultant learns about your students, schedule, staffing and goals.
  2. Get a plan built around your needs. We recommend the right service, or combination of services, and the right format.
  3. Meet your educators. We match certified teachers or licensed specialists to your students and your state’s requirements.
  4. Start learning and track progress. Instruction begins on your schedule, and your team sees attendance and progress as it happens.

Frequently asked questions

How long does credit recovery take?

It depends on the course, the student and the program. Some students finish in a few weeks, others take a full semester. Ask any provider how pacing works and how progress is measured.

Is online credit recovery effective?

It can be. Results depend on the program, and many students do better with a live teacher who can help when they’re stuck.

Can credit recovery happen during the school year?

Yes. Many programs, including Fullmind’s, run during the school year as well as in summer.
